Durango resident Robert H. "Bob" Mountain died Wednesday, Feb. 27,
2008, at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was
74.
Mr. Mountain was born Feb. 23, 1934, to Henry J. and Alta Page
Mountain in Long Beach, Calif.
He grew up in Southern California, where he graduated from South
Gate High School in 1952. After high school, Mr. Mountain enlisted
in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He earned the rating of
engineman (EM3) aboard the minesweepers USS Ruddy (MSF 380) and USS
Prime (MSF 466).
On Aug. 2, 1953, Mr. Mountain married Beverly Jean Hering of South
Gate, Calif.
After completing his military service, Mr. Mountain went to work for
North American Aviation's Rocketdyne division, which later became
Rockwell International. During his 38 years of work there, Mr.
Mountain worked as a quality engineer on propulsion, electronics,
automotive products and weapons-systems programs. Though he did not
have a college degree, Mr. Mountain earned a reputation as a
disciplined analyst and problem solver, which helped him get various
company transfers to such places as Michigan, Illinois, Texas and
Georgia.
In 1969, Mr. Mountain and his family joined the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. For his 39 years of church membership,
he served in various lay ministerial and administrative positions.
He also was a volunteer leader for the Boy Scouts of America,
including serving as a scout master.
After retiring from Rockwell, Mr. Mountain lived in Atlanta, Ga., to
work with his oldest grandson as a volunteer for the 1996 Summer
Olympic Games. He and his wife then moved to Durango, where they
planned and built their dream home, giving it personal touches that
Mr. Mountain built himself.
He was an active member of several Durango community organizations
and hobby groups. He was an award-winning amateur photographer, and
won the "Reserve Grand Champion of the Show" award at the 2007 La
Plata County Fair. His family said when he was not doing
photography, he enjoyed genealogical research, woodworking,
gardening, rock-hounding and entertaining his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.

Kristen S. Read of Durango, Karen K. Bachman of Albuquerque, and
Katherine A. Poulsen of Hesperia, Calif.; sons Robert E. Mountain of
