James Lee Farmer

SALT LAKE CITY - James Lee Farmer passed away Monday, August 17 of a
hemorrhagic stroke in Salt Lake City at the age of 70.
Jim was born August 8, 1938 in South Gate, California, the son of James
and Ellen Farmer. He graduated from Caltech with a BS in Chemistry in
1960 and received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from Brown University
in 1966. Jim was a professor in the Department of Zoology at Brigham
Young University for 31 years. He published papers on the genetics of
bacteria and Drosophila.
He married Gladys Clark in the Salt Lake Temple on January 27, 1967. He
was an active member of the LDS Church, and held many positions
throughout his life, including as an ordinance worker in the Boston
Temple. He and his wife served a mission to England in 2005.
Jim loved driving, hiking, and camping in Southern Utah. He was an avid
learner, with a unending curiosity about the world and how it works.
Jim is survived by his wife and five children, Sarah, Clark, Rachel,
Jared, and Deborah (Mike); his sisters Anne and Marlene; and his
granddaughters Anna and Lilly.
